Each summer, Swim Sail Science engages approximately 60 rising 4th and 5th grade students from low-income Boston households through a dynamic blend of swimming, sailing, and academics. In this intensive, five-week, two-summer program, students reinforce basic skills and build high level critical thinking through a multidisciplinary, hands-on curriculum centered around environmental studies and sustainability. Each week, participants engage in a combination of swimming instruction, exploring Boston Harbor and learning how to sail with three peers and an instructor, activities designed to build community and social-emotional skills, and approximately three hours of academics per day. SSS is free and includes bus transportation, meals, full-day care, support from on-staff social workers, and year-round opportunities for sailing and swimming lessons.
